New: OPC-UA Event & Alarm Monitoring

Stefanie Gruber

Machine alarms typically stay local. They show up on the machines HMI, get logged and are cleared within a day or two. Nobody knows which fault is causing the most downtime, or whether the same failure keeps coming back, because the data never leaves the machine.

OPC UA is the communication standard modern machine controllers already use to expose data like temperature, pressure or cycle times, without requiring a custom integration for every brand of PLC. Alarms run on that same protocol. They've simply never been picked up.

Available directly in the Autonoma digital customer platform, native alarms from an OPC UA server can now be captured with the OPC UA Connector alongside regular datastreams, with customers choosing exactly which ones to track. That data flows straight into the platform, where it becomes something a whole team can actually work with, not just something an operator happens to notice on-site.

What it means for our customers

Full visibility, from anywhere. Count and duration of each machine fault can be viewed in Optimization Explorer. This allows a service manager in the office to track what is happening at a customer site several hundred kilometers away.

Data-backed maintenance decisions. Service teams can finally see which fault is genuinely costing the most time and back fix decisions with real numbers. The history also shows whether a fault was a one-off or a repeat offender, making it easy to plan a service visit or explain to a customer why a specific part needs attention.

One clear alarm language for everyone. Configurable error code lists translate raw codes into plain language, defined to match the terms a team already uses internally. Instead of "Error 1234," the alarm reads "Oil pressure too low". That description can also be translated into other languages for other markets. Different colors can also be defined for different alarm types, warnings, errors, or events, so the severity is clear at a glance. That cuts down on back-and-forth calls just to work out what actually happened.

Setup with no engineering overhead. Configuration runs entirely through the existing Discovery dialog, no custom development required, so teams can get alarm monitoring running on a new machine type in minutes.

The result is a genuine edge for machine builders

Catching problems early and keeping uptime high for their customers. Alarms that used to vanish after a day or two now become part of a growing, searchable service history.
